Sci-fi Grenade concept by peterku Sci-fi Grenade concept by peterku
Concept of sci fi thermobaric grenade.

Principle:
Device consists of a container of fuel and explosive charges.  First explosive charge disperse the fuel in a cloud that mixes with atmospheric oxygen. Another explosions detonate the cloud, creating a massive blast wave. Various fuels in cannister are coded by colour of canisters which is visible through transparent case made of acrylate polymers.

Work is mine. Work has been made in 3ds max + vray as rendering engine. Completed in Photoshop.  Picture is bigger to see details.

So what do you think. Do you like it or not? tnx for comments if any. bye.

P.S.
I did several grenade concepts in different styles.

1. Frag grenade concept
2. EMP grenade
3. Grenade concept
4. Sci-fi Grenade concept

looking at this design, the rule of cool reigns supreme, loving the aesthetics, and for a grendae this is a very original aproach.

the clear polymers might need a bit more darker gray blended in with a slighty more rough texture to make it less obvious on any background they might be used upon, & to make it look a bit less like the soft white-ish toy or tupperware plastic you regularly see in/on household items and make it more like what sturdy millitary polymers look like for on example AR15/M4 clear magazines (example: cdn2.bigcommerce.com/server430…)

other then that i really like your original vision and artistic license and take on a futuristic thermobaric grenade.

functionality wise, i am not sure what the lower part is for, if these are impact triggers for percussion based detonation, then the little ball or cap seems to small to be of practical use, if instead these are electric arc sparkers for the detonation of the fuel cloud, they seem a bit far spaced as for every centimeter of distance an arc of electricity has to travel, you need tens of thousands of volts.... and this is a small device on which a hefty powersource is probably not avaiable. to detonate a fuel cloud, two close-by pins providing the sparking arc on every cap should do the trick, instead of the more difficult to create big long arcs all around as it looks like here.
if this is instead the second charge as a whole.... then it looks way to complicated for hat it has to do... detonate.

the top part; cap, spoon and pin, look great and in general looks expertly crafted.

the middle section, i already mentioned the slight issue with the clear polymers, so that aside. what is left are the fuel/explosives, usually these would be in the same type of coloration as the rest of the grenade especially as they are clearly visible. seeing the antracite base color of the grendae there would be with some white or gray text on it and a obvious coloured band to indicate what type and kind the explosive belongs to.

the bright yellow and hazard band doesn't work here at all in my opinion and makes it more of a shoot me here indicator when worn on a vest or belt, and it being thermobaric.... thats not a good thing.
however, i understand the coloration as this is an artists representation and it brings attention to the area.

overal its a grenade, you show it in a nice a clean way, the impact of the presentation however isn't that great as theres no additional information about this device and its parts, and the surface texture upon which it rests, although looking nice, isn't anything to complement the grenade.
for a future piece with grenades, try placing them on a grenade case for example (example: media.liveauctiongroup.net/i/1…).

so there you have it, my critique on the object with clear polymers as promised, i hope you like the feedback :). let me know if you would like me to do this more often.

Oh? Haven't seen one of these from you yet! Right then, let's get down to the details.

What's good about this. Well, the first and foremost thing that stands out are the textures. The white casing around the center piece if well done with just about the right amount of foggy-ness and even some scratched detail. The overall grenade material is also pretty good and isn't too overpowering. The details lay in the necessary amount of things to look at that keep from the grey color from being all there.

The not so good. While the center casing is definitely well done, it does appear to look a little... plastic? It's a good material, but I don't think it fits the theme of the scene. That's just me however... picky picky me.

interesting concept. But would the blast radius be larger than the distance the average soldier can throw it?  This is the problem of the current US Army White Prosperous grenade. The average soldier can't throw it far enough to guarentee their own safety.  ^_^

you probably right. If anything like this  ever exist it will have remote controoler to detonate.

Yikes........if the shock wave doesn't  get you the lack of free oxygen in the air afterward  will definitely give you problems

Very nice look. It has a fairly practical look to it and does not appear to be yer typical sci-fi hodgepodge of parts from other objects.

I vaguely recall a flamethrower type weapon that used a small charge to pressurize the storage tanks and force the fuel out the nozzle. So evidently the idea of the grenade using an explosive to compress and disperse the gas is sound.

first , color coding is widely used in the military ( look at the different bullet types )  .. second most plastics are made with / from crude oil..  and some are harder than metals ( lexan )
sooo  the chemically reactive hard plastic is blown out an softened in the first blast ,,  then used as an accelerate in the fuel of the second blast....
YES ..  i like this concept very much.!!

tnx mate. I agree on what you wrote on plastic. Todays armies are about to start using ammo where cases are not metal but plastic. (because of weight.)

..  the G-11 ,, was a early design,, mostly plastic an bullpup ,,  the bullets were caseless ( no spent brass..) only metal was a tungsten core ( steel in civie rounds )

yea. those bullets have future. About guns I am not sure. skeleton always will be steel. no chance to replace it by some sort of plastic i think.

...  actually there's a new material " graphene " which is 100 times stronger than steel... they just haven't figured how to make in large quantity's ...

that graphene material is advance but dont replace steel in critical places. it has problem with temperature high or low.....

Im a bit of a dolt with 3D modeling still so im just wondering how do you achieve the see through casing on it? Im trying to model up a vial right now but im having so trouble learning how to do a see through texture >__<

Cool, a hand-held fuel-air bomb.  That would be great for taking out bunkers.

One suggestion, though, and this only concerns your description.  A thermobaric warhead uses an initial concussion charge (low heat, high blast) to scatter the fuel, and then a secondary incendiary charge (high heat, low blast) to ignite it.

Oh, and I just noticed something most people forget about.  Grenades have three safeties:  a pin (which everyone knows about), a safety lever or "spoon" (which you also have), and a thumb clip.  The thumb clip goes on the safety lever, along the body of the grenade (say about half way down the lever).  You have to remove it before you can release the lever.  If you don't even pulling the pin doesn't do anything.
