Description

JAKUTA - Concept of energy rifle.

Concept based on usual shape of M-16. I just add „aerodynamic” look and some “wtf” parts. All cover in shine color in order not to make it too dark. (Concept, modeling and rendering is mine.) I didn’t cover it into full textures to keep attention on model itself. (And save time of course :). Vray made the rest.

I did 4 pictures:

1. Front side: [link]
2. Rear side: [link]
3. Perspective: [link]
4. Tech draw: [link]

I find this is an excellent fictional weapon model. Here's how I evaluate it:

Vision: The vision will get 5 points because it is obvious that a conscious effort has been made to balance fictional parts and outlook with real-world practicality. I really appreciate this effort, i.e. to make something fictional actually look feasible and I try to do this in my designs as well despite the mountain of problems and restrain this causes. From its general shape to the tiniest of details this rifle looks really sci-fi but also really feasible, (in a fictional way).

Originality: I'll give this 4 stars (instead of 5) because of the choice to base some of its elements, mostly the stock, grip and collimating sight on existing real-world rifle models (mainly the M-4). Besides those parts, the feeling and aesthetic of this weapon is very good and original.

Technique: I'll give this 5 stars. Modelling is top-notch without being over-the-top or too "wordy". Material choice and rendering are at professional level.

Impact: I'm always on the lookout for nice vehicle or aircraft models - weapons are really second priority to me but this one not only caught my attention but it also let my imagination loose. So, I'll give this 5 stars.

My only criticism would be the choice of the laser pointer: Having a collimating "reflect" sight like the EOTech renders the laser obsolete, and more so since a laser pointer is an active device which under certain circumstances presents the danger of making the user visible before he even fires a shot.

In general this weapon manages to strike a golden spot between realism and fiction and it very successfully combines sleek and dynamic design elements. I could say that between the few dozen guns that I've encountered here on DeviantArt this is arguably one of the 3 best.
