Elwyn-Front by peterku Elwyn-Front by peterku
ELWYN - concept of futuristic both hand sword.

I wanted to make it no so usual. Instead of  one monolithic piece I split it into several parts working together in reasonable structure. Critical part is central hub. This device connect all parts. Its major function is to absorb impact energy from all sections and partially spread them through whole structure. All parts are detachable. If anything gets broken then it can be easily replaced. (In contract with my previous works now I did grip simple to give hands solid holding feature.)
Usually this kind of stuff  are black or metal. I decided that colorization is designed to follow way of goodness. White color as symbol of purity in various strength. Also material is non standard.
Hope somewhere in the future I also make counter design for dark side.

Used program: 3ds max +Vray engine+Photoshop

I did 2 pictures:
(Elwin front is large picture. I recommend to open it in full resolution to see details.I did one large picture instead of several ones  in standard size.)
1. ELWYN front -  peterku.deviantart.com/art/Elw…
2. ELWYN center - peterku.deviantart.com/art/Elw…

So what do you think? do you like it or not. tnx for comments if any.

You need to get out my head dude nearly every weapon you've designed is in my Novel, this particular weapon is my main characters, he likes the strength of two hands but the speed of a shorter blade than most swords.  Not only am i a writer but i'm a member of a game dev company, if we take off i know who to come to for 3d design.

Keep it up buddy

the scratches on the blade are a great enhancement that really make the piece feel real. I am thoroughly in awe of your work.

If you won't mind my asking, what is the blade length? It seems a bit too short for a two handed blade..

its too short probably. I still have a problem to make a right proportions on the swords...

I LOVE THIS
It's like...syfy sword!
The colors DON'T make it steampunk, which is awesome(because steampunk is overdone) but it's like robotic and looks like it's brand new out of a factory from some mechanic engineer.

tnx you. Can you tell me some of those fuck-ups in 3ds max? dont worry I'm not going to persuade you to use 3ds max. everyone has to find his way. I'm just curious.

mostly it's wonky geometry for no reason whatsoever, random crashes, gizmos deciding to stop working altogether, among some other smaller things. I like Max's UI and a lot of other features in it, it's just some things that it doesn't have and some of it's issues (may be pilot error in some cases) i don't like. It was the first 3D software I've worked with, and is thus my homage, but some of it is lackluster.

most of them I know :). Random crashing was common in the past but now it is OK. That gizmo problem is caused by unfortunate chosen hotkey.  it could be hit by accident quite often.  And there are more other problems. But it is getting better. in the past it was like walking mine fields. :)

I think it's an awesome sword, but I am curious as to the name. I am assuming it is a loose connection between the weapon and the Elven name, because it seems as though the design would stray far, far from the whole Elven/nature connection. Not a criticism, just curiosity. It is a beautiful weapon.

i feel the blade is a little too short for the length of the handle given that they are about the same length. Other than that i love the design

omg. I have problem to hit right length of sword all the time... in most of my sword work people say that. fortunately it is easy to make blade longer. Must always use a reference of real sword to make it right in dimensions :)

Looks interesting.  The centre piece could also house a gyroscope for stability and to manage its angular momentum for a virtual weight reduction in battle.  Did you mean to say two-handed sword or claymore?  Also, is that Jesus Fish at the lower left?

yep. another function for hub :) that claymore is much better name. and yes it is symbol of early christian people.

nothing special. all feature can be found on i-net in tutorials. I just try to avoid DOF if it is possible. Personally i dont like too much this effect and is quite time consuming while rendering.

So how is the blade supposed to collapse? Is it segmented or does it fold inward? I'd imagine that the hilt is comprised of twin cylinders, and the center can condense and be attached to some belt-side holster or a kind of lock on one's pant leg. If properly manufactured, the blade itself could split in two and become a twin short sword combo. I know it's digitally rendered, but it's just a thought.

Not to be a party pooper but the most common English terms would be two handed sword, longsword or greatsword. Broadsword is generally used to refer to basket hilted one handed swords to keep them apart from the rapier spardoon or smallsword and not the cross hilted one handed so-called arming sword.
Claidheamh mor means big sword in Scottish gealic, shortend to claymore, if referring to a two handed sword they generally have a v-shaped crossguard It can also mean a Scottish one handed basket hilt sword.
Espadon or montante in Spanish

Spadone or spada longa in Italian
Langes schwert, Zweihänder, Bidenhänder or Schlachtswert  in German depending a bit on the size of the sword.
French I think it is called “sword of war”… but in French of course, though don’t quote me on that.

Sorry about that I just want to educate the world a bit

As to the design I think it is pretty great, though I would personally have put parrying hooks above the ricasso just to make it feel safer to halfsword, mainly because it has a quite short blade. And the render is really, really pretty as always
